Goleta Book Signing and Discussion
I'll be signing and speaking at Goleta Borders on Thursday, December 13th at 7:00 PM.
I will be discussing EMPYRE with Barbara Harthorn, head of UCSB's Center for Nanotechnology in Society. We'll be talking about the reality of current and future technology in relation to creative perceptions (books, films, etc.) of such. How each impacts the other. How our preconceptions of future technology color our entertainment dealing with such topics. How that entertainment then impacts our conception of the technology around us. And, more broadly, what the ramifications of ever-quickening technological progress will be on both society and the individual.

USS RONALD REAGAN
Before it deployed to the Gulf, I had the opportunity to spend a night on our newest aircraft carrier. I flew out to the Reagan on a C-2 Greyhound, a twin engine prop. Landing was unforgettable to say the least: 100 mph to a dead stop in two seconds. Over the next twenty-four hours, the Navy treated me to a full tour of the ship. It was one of the more amazing experiences of my life. I was deeply impressed with the people I met, both enlisted men/women and officers. And the equipment was beyond amazinga combination of the highest tech and the grittiest industrial, all somehow wrangled into perfect coordination.
